Integrity personified….Judith Blakeman

The Dame hears the very sad news of the death of Judith Blakeman. She was hugely popular and highly regarded.

Judith was first elected to the Council in May 1978 as Councillor for Kelfield Ward. She served, with a one term gap (1990-94) until she stood down in May 2022. She also represented Avondale Ward (1994-98); Colville Ward (1998-2002); Notting Barns Ward (2002-14) and Notting Dale Ward (2014-22).

Judith also served as Leader of the Labour Group, Labour Group Whip and Deputy Mayor, 2007-08….the golden years of proper, intelligent opposition.

I could not agree more – “the golden years of proper, intelligent, opposition.”

She was one of the Greats of the Labour Movement: hard working and dedicated.

She was marvellous with the help she provided to Grenfell people in the aftermath of that dreadful fire.

    May she rest in peace.

Judith really supported the efforts of a Tory bloke who was granted the tenancy of a flat on a run down Council estate in Notting Dale. He oversaw the cleaning up of a children’s playground strewn with needlesn and dumped household lumber. He assisted the elderly with getting repairs to their homes done to a decent standard. She also appreciated the community focused work that he did for children, pensioners and the disabled on the estate.

Divisive political partisanship had no place in Judith’s politics – she respected political differences and was generous with praise for a “good guy” who voted Tory.

Judith also appreciated the work that Francis O’Connor did for the Grenfell Action Group. Along with Pat Mason of the Labour Party, she paid a very fitting tribute to him when he died.

Disappointing that none of the Labour lot have blogged on here to sing Judith’s praises.
