SCRAP RBK&C ‘CONSULTATIONS’

The Council spends a small fortune on consultations. The resident below echoes the commonly held view that the results are ignored.

As the invisible Cllr Mary Weale(of the huge allowance) is said to say, “we hear, but we don’t listen.

Residents are getting fed up with bike hire companies abusing public space for huge private profit.

Here is an example of the council asking for opinions and then ignoring the results. Why bother?

“I am getting a bit fed-up with the residents’ car hating council, taking our local residents’ parking space away, recently for “tree pits” and now they want more for “e-scooter and e-bike” parking, when the effect of the bays created so far has been for their operators to dump yet more of these nuisances in the Borough, where they continue to be left blocking pavements, with no effective action taken.

My RA has responded to previous such “consultations” and our views are simply ignored.

Perhaps the Dame might like to express her disapproval of those responsible in the hope of embarassing them into being slightly more considerate of residents’ views.

Off on another hike to where I was able to park my car.”

These ‘consultations’ that Councils do are a joke.

They simply do them for forms sake and go ahead with their pet scheme, disregarding even majority, feedback.

All Councils are at it across the country and the civil servants and politicians deem it OK that huge sums are spent on this pointless pastime!

    When does consultation become notification

Acts of Parliament often require local authorities and state bodies like the NHS to carry out “consultations” on a number of things. I know that London Transport had to carry out “consultation” to close Aldwych station and to close the Epping to Ongar branch of the Central line.

In the 1980’s, the Thatcher Government wanted to close a number of hospitals. There was a statutory duty to consult communities on these proposals. Service users often complained that what they had to say was ignored and it was obvious that the closure of a particular hospital was a foregone conclusion prior to the consultation exercise getting off the ground.

Councillor Weale’s much lamented comment, “We hear but we don’t listen” could just as easily be summed up,

Weale is not as daft as one might think. When legislation creates a statutory duty to “consult,” the Council is obliged to do it but does not have to heed it.

Consultation is often considered to be a process which protects citizens from the excesses of a centrist state and arbitrary decision making.

Have a go at Powell and Colman about the consultation sham.

Joe Powell and Ben Colman are an insipid and insouciant pair. They will do nothing about the “consultation sham.” Powell is my MP. He would be more suited to being a don at Oxbridge. He is a typical academic and he is in the wrong job. He is a decent man but does not have the vitality to achieve for Labour in politics. Not sure what to make of Colman; nice enough, I suppose.
